Just finished watching Firefly and Serenity, and am wondering how this show got canceled. I enjoyed this show much, I mean I love pretty much everything Joss Whedon does, but this show was amazing. It had humor, adventure, drama, pretty much all you want in a tv show. How great shows like this get canceled in their first season while other shows *cough* OTH *cough* keep going well after they should *cough* 6th Season *cough*. This show had great writing and probably many more stories to tell. That is why I hate that this show didn't get the chance to become even more amazing than it was.
Nathan Fillion is so the man of my dreams right now. Between this show and Castle, my love for him knows no bounds. He is awesome as Captain Malcolm Reynolds. He is so perfect in that role, he was perfectly cast. The character is the perfect combination of devilish charm, sweetness (at least in certain matters), humor, and many others qualities that I look for in characters when I watch a TV show. That's how I know that a character will be someone that I want to root for.
I love every character that is on this show, there isn't one that I don't like. I wish that this show could have gotten the chance to finish the storylines that were started such as Mal and Inara's romance, River in general, Shepherd's background, and Simon and Kaylee's romance. I mean I know the movie allowed Joss Whedon to wrap up some storylines but I don't think it gave his stories the justice that they deserve. He is and always will be on of the great storytellers of our time.
The characters on this show were so great. Simon was great, a little uptight, but who wouldn't be if you grew up where he grew up and were also on the run because you had to save your sister from the government. Jayne was so awesome that everytime he opened his mouth I couldn't wait to hear what he said next. I loved Inara and Mal, especially in the movie there was definitely some serious development between the two of them. I believe that if the show could have gone on this romance would have been one of the great television romances that I love to fall in love with. They were a will-they-won't-they couple that we didn't get to find out if they would.
Simon and Kaylee were two adorable, they kept getting their signals crossed about what the other meant. Or Simon would say something stupid and Kaylee would misunderstand. This relationship was another that didn't get the chance to grow naturally like you can see in other shows that have a few seasons under their belt.
One story I was really disappointed not to see finished and in finished I mean told in the way that Joss would have told it was River's story. Her character was so intriguing, I wanted to find out more about what happened to her. Summer Glau did such an amazing job of portraying someone who was not all there, someone who had such a traumatic event happen to her. Plus she was totally kickass in the movie. I wanted to know if she was going to come out of this on the other side okay. I wanted to see if she was going to get better, I wanted to learn more about her and Simon as children (okay that part is just because I wanted to see Zac Efron as young Simon, he was such a cutie).
What can I say about Wash and Zoey? They were a mature relationship, the only real one at least in the romance department that we got. These two truly loved each other. I can't believe that Wash was killed in the movie. These two were really sweet and I wish we could have seen how they fell in love in flashbacks especially because Zoey hated him when she first met him.
This show was one of the greats that didn't get the chance to tell the story that they had set out to tell. And that is truly a tragedy. This is one show that I fully recommend, it has a wonderful combination of humor, drama, sci-fi, western adventure, romance. I encourage you to check it out.
